The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes offers a view of a landscape forever altered by the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century.

The effects of the ash were felt worldwide. From the vent at Novarupta, the towering column of ash, called a plinian eruption column, jetted skyward with little interruption for 60 hours.

Concurrently, it distributed ash flows that filled the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and fed a high umbrella cloud more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) wide that shrouded most of southern Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
