Alaskan Rainbow Trout
Rainbow Trout Fishing in Katmai National Park
When is rainbow trout fishing in Katmai?
Rainbow trout fishing in the Katmai area can be excellent all summer, with many streams holding prolific numbers of rainbow trout.
The rainbow trout of Alaska are fish of legend. The Naknek River and streams of the surrounding Katmai National Park area offer some of the best Alaska rainbow trout fishing in the world. Our lodge Katmai B&B is located on the Naknek River and very close to other famous rivers and streams of Katmai. Accordingly, many of our guests enjoy the thrill of chasing rainbow trout and do so while walk-wade fly-fishing.
Most food sources of the Alaska rainbow trout are salmon-based, and the flies we use imitate those foods. That means we use flies that imitate salmon eggs, salmon fry, and salmon flesh and are wet flies.
The seasonal return of spawning salmon means an influx of food for these fish, and they gorge during the short summer months. Alaska rainbow trout will ignore almost all dry fly activity to feed on much larger and more nutritious food.
The western Rocky Mountain States are where to fish dry flies, yet Alaska is where to catch monster Rainbow Trout. While we do see some beautiful days of dry fly fishing during the early season before the salmon spawn, you, as a guest, should expect to fish wet flies for most, if not all, of the trip. The Naknek River, the home water of Katmai Fishing Guides, is one of the few rivers in the world holding wild rainbow trout exceeding 30 inches in length. While some weeks offer better opportunities than others, the possibility exists to catch the big Naknek fish any week of the season. Big fish need big food, and the Naknek River is full of protein-rich food sources such as salmon fry, sculpins, and lampreys. The Naknek is best fished with sinking lines and large, articulated leech patterns to entice the fish. We are a short boat ride from the rapids, the best section of the Naknek. Bristol Bay rainbow trout are world-class; they average between 15-35 inches and 5-15lbs on the Naknek and slightly smaller on some smaller rivers. We will guide for trout on the Naknek on a limited basis and have limited availability during peak trout season. We will practice our best fish handling procedures when trout fishing. We use large rubber nets, barbless hooks, wet hands, and keep our fish in water.
